Tent morning

Sleep

Elliott woke at 5am in the tent, but went back to sleep until 6.20am.

He had a nap in the car on the way home for about an hour and a half.

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep.

Food

Elliott had cheerios for breakfast.

He had chicken nuggets and beans for lunch.

For tea he had toast with marmite and a yoghurt pudding.

He had a biscuit for an afternoon snack at a service station on the way home.

Toilet

He had no accidents today and 2 different lots of poos.

Naughtiness

He was really good all day apart from one incident in the afternoon after we got home. We were on our way to the park and I'd just popped to the toilet myself and could hear him throwing his cars about in a really destructive way. So I asked him not to and explained it wasn't good for the cars or the floor and he did it again in front of me. So we had a time out, which he responded to really well.

Activities

After we woke we played in the tent for a while, hiding in the sleeping bag, and bouncing on the blow up mattress (him, not me).

Then we went in for breakfast and watched some television with Lucas, Billy and baby Isaac (Jim, Hannah and Jack didn't stay over night - but Billy and Chas also stayed in a tent in the garden with us). Then there was lots of playing while we all got up properly - inside and out, and again he really seemed to be getting on brilliantly with Billy, and they were playing very nicely together and even doing some imagining together.

Eventually we got going after an early lunch and he slept for quite a long time during the car journey. But it was a really good journey again and when he was awake we listened to some Noddy stories which he seemed to really enjoy.

After we got back we did some playing with cars and some drawing before we went out to the local park for an hour or so.

After we got back it was time for tea and normal bedtime routine.

Mini FoF

Sleep

Elliott woke at 6.50am.

He had a nap in the car for about an hour on the way to Cambridge.

He went to bed at 7.40pm and went to sleep quickly in the tent, but I sat with him while he did. He woke up again at around 10ish but went back to sleep quickly after a few minutes of comforting and cuddling.

Food

Elliott had corn flakes for breakfast.

He had cheese and ham sandwiches for lunch with a yoghurt pudding for lunch.

For tea he had fish fingers, sausages, a barbequed burger, a roll with spread, some chips and some orange segments.

He had some wine gums in the car as a snack during the journey to Cambridge..

Toilet

He had one accident today during the day while he was in the paddling pools. He did no poos during the day at all though.

Naughtiness

He was really good all day apart from one incident during when he first met Hannah and Jim's little boy Jack and pushed him a little. I had a stern chat with him and he was nice to Jack from then on.

Activities

We went to mini FoF in Cambridge today at the Dawson's house.

We left quite early after breakfast a bit of packing. The journey went really well and we stopped off a couple of times at services for leg stretching and to break the journey up. He also fell asleep for about an hour even though it was still before lunch!

When we arrived Phil, Sarah and their 8 month old baby Isaac were already there, as well as Alex, Maz, Lucas and Julia. He was a little shy for a few minutes but soon warmed up and remembered the Dawson house from the last time we were there.

As it was a nice day we were out in the garden almost immediately for lunch and then onwards - and there was lots of playing with outdoor toys (tricylce, balls, etc), We also filled up some mini paddling pools which he really enjoyed splashing in.

During the afternoon Hannah, Jim and their little boy Jack (about the same age as Billy) arrived as did Chas and Billy. Elliott seemed really pleased to see Billy and they did a lot of playing together, but with some encouragement did let Jack join in and started playing with him really nicely as well. They included Lucas lots, but he was a little younger for some things (e.g. playing with footballs). He also did quite a bit of interacting with baby Isaac and when he did he was really gentle and patient with him.

We had some inside play time as well as being outside a lot as we wanted to make sure they weren't all in the sun lots of time (and I did use sun cream, which I have in his bag) - and inside we did playing with cars, other toys and even some group reading of stories.

He really enjoyed the barbeque and sat really nicely at the table.

After tea we went to a local park with Billy for a bit to run off even more energy - this had some really nice play equipment and he did his normal racing around.

Then it was bath time and time for bed in the tent - which he really took in his stride and seemed quite excited by. I did stay with him while he went to sleep in the tent and later at around 10pm he did wake up and call out for me, but in general he seemed quite taken by the tent and it's definitely a holiday option I'll be thinking about.

All in all a really fun day though, with lots of activity, fun and socialising (for us both!)

Grandpa visits

Sleep

Elliott had a short nap around lunchtime, but only for about half an hour - however he did seem quite tired by the end of the day.

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep. I managed to get him down to only having one car with him in bed, but he was tired and when I asked / encouraged him to park the car before going to sleep he became quite agitated so I let him park the car on his bedside table. I had a quick look at 8pm and the car was still on the bedside table and he was fast asleep, so hopefully it's a step in the right direction.

Food

Elliott had a burger, chips and some peas for lunch in a pub with Grandpa and me.

For tea he had a marmite roll and a yoghurt pudding.

He had a biscuit for an afternoon snack.

Toilet

No accidents at all today - however there was no poo today.

Naughtiness

He was really good all day, apart from some agitated behaviour at bath time. Basically he was playing with cars before bath and didn't want to park them and get ready for his bath, so I gave him a count after some negotiating. He got upset by this, but it was quite showy rather than genuine and I ignored it for a few minutes and he was soon getting undressed and being good as though he'd never been upset.

Activities

We went swimming in the morning at Reading central pool again. This was really good again with floats and focusing a lot on kicking on his back and front. Lots of giggling and fun.

After swimming Grandpa came to visit and we went to a pub for lunch.

Then we went on to town to buy a starter bike without pedals as mentioned before, which was good fun, and also meant lots of looking at other toys.

When we got back we played with cars and trains and watched some of Cars (and he talked loads about the cinema and how big Lighting McQueen had been!) However he seemed quite tired (as mentioned) so I didn't want to do anything other than relaxing and low effort activity!

Truck special

Activities

We had a great time at Truck.

When we first arrived and got through the registration process we went straight to the tents. I think for a short while he was quite overwhelmed by so many people being around, but once we'd got to the tents he became fascinated with them and did a lot of going in and out of them.

The tents were pitched right opposite the kids tents (they had a couple this year) - so after quarter of an hour or so we wandered over there. First he played inside the tent for younger children reading some books and playing with plasticine. Then we went outside to the sandpit and he had lots of fun with the sand. We also met another little boy, probably about a year older than Elliott, called Douglas who he was interacting with a bit.

Then we went off to the tent next door where there was a workshop for children to make their own musical instruments. This was a little advanced for him - it involved screwdrivers, etc - but we had fun watching and playing with some random instruments that were being made.

Next Graham and Anthea (Graham's girlfriend) arrived so we went back to the tents to meet up with them. He had some rolls and animal biscuits at this point. He became comfortable around Graham and Anthea really quickly which was brilliant.

After they'd unpacked their stuff and he'd finished eating we all went for a wander around the rest of the festival. One thing we didn't see much of though this year was actual bands, though I did have his headphones with me in case. Unfortunately the timing of our wander meant that every stage we passed seemed to be between sets which was a shame. He did really well with the different sights and vibes overall - though at one point near the main stage did again seem a little overwhelmed with the amount of people (though he was also quite tired by this stage).  However after lots of playtime from the 3 of us he was soon back on form and asking to go back to the sand.

So we left and wandered back to the sand pit. On the way we passed a stall with lots of different sized drums where people were randomly drumming and he got really excited by this. He waited quietly for his chance and then grabbed a beater and started hitting lots of different size of drum. The guy running the stall was really encouraging, but ironically I think this made him go a little shy for a bit, before he then got back into some drumming.

After a while we left the drums and went back to the sand pit where we had 10 minutes of so play time before it was time to leave.

Railway track

Sleep

Elliott woke at 7.30am (I think he was tired from long car journeys).

He had a nap in the afternoon around 3pm for about an hour (he fell asleep on the sofa on me).

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep.

Food

Elliott had shreddies for breakfast.

He had chicken pieces, alphabet potato shapes and peas for lunch with a yoghurt pudding.

For tea he had chicken nuggets, potatoes and beans (though he didn't eat many potatoes).

He had a yoghurt for an afternoon snack - he was very pro yoghurt today.

Toilet

He had no accidents today and did some great shouting for "bottom wiping"!

Naughtiness

He was really good all day.

Activities

We took my car to the garage this morning as it got dented in a car park and they're fixing it, so he had lots of fun thinking I had a "new car" as we were given a courtesy car (a grey Nissan).

Then we spent most of the day just playing with different toys and puzzles (we did some jigsaws and some alphabet cards as well as building a lot of "railway track"). We also tried a bit of French. We did go out at one point for a fruit shoot and some coffee which just helped break the day up, but mainly we relaxed after all the travelling and excitement of the last few days.

Also as mentioned he fell asleep in the afternoon on the sofa while watching Baby Jake so I think he was quite tired, but hoepfully will be rested for pre-schoool tomorrow.

Blast off

Sleep

Elliott woke at 6.30am.

He had a nap in the car for about an hour and a half.

He went to bed at 7.45pm and went straight to sleep.

Food

Elliott had cheerios for breakfast.

He had cheese on toast with a yoghurt pudding for lunch.

For tea he had chicken nuggets, potatoes and beans (though he didn't eat many potatoes).

He had a biscuit for a morning snack.

Toilet

He had one accident today in the car during the journey, but I think this was while he was asleep. So we changed clothes and dried the seat cover under a dryer at the nearest motorway service station.

Naughtiness

He was really good all day apart from one incident in the morning. We went for a wander while we were waiting for Vicky and Pete to wake up - to a nearby park and home via a corner shop. In the corner shop he was adamant that he wanted chocolate but I wouldn't let him so he started throwing a strop and getting pretty distressed. This lasted for a lot of the walk home until I stopped and made him sit down on a bench until he'd calmed down - not really as a punishment time out just to help. It worked pretty well, though when we got back he seemed upset again for a few minutes - but much easier to distract back in a house.

Activities

Before Vicky and Pete woke up we went to a nearby park after breakfast for some fresh air and fun. This was really good apart from the chocolate incident in the cornershop on the way home.

After they'd got up "Great Uncle Jim" and Tim came to visit and Elliott was in his element. He was showing them all his cars, running and jumping, playing cars with them, etc. As well as doing some pretty advanced conversations. He also really wasn't shy for very long with the new arrivals. We also went out into the garden for some proper running around and chasing.

After lunch we left and stopped off in Leicester on the way home at the National Space Centre. This seemed to capture his imagination (there were lots of space rockets, films about space, etc) - although qutie a bit of it was aimed at slightly older children I think. However they were having a special lego event with lots of space ships and space stations built out of lego on display and he loved these. We also bought a toy space shuttle ("space ship aeroplane").

After we got home there wasn't really much time before tea and bed - but he was really well behaved on the journey again and I think enjoyed his trip to the north.

Sheffield

Sleep

Elliott woke at 6am.

He had a nap in the car for about an hour.

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep.

Food
Elliott had shreddies for breakfast.

He had  marmite roll for lunch.

For tea he had a fish fingers, beans and chips with a yoghurt pudding.

He had a biscuit for a morning snack.

Toilet

No accidents at all today, even with a long car journey, when he was really good at asking in advance if we could stop.

Naughtiness

He was really good all day.

Activities

We went to visit Victoria and Pete in their new house in Sheffield today.

We set off after breakfast so we arrived at lunchtime with time for a few stops along the way to break up the journey. Elliott was really good in the car - talking, singing and napping a bit.

After we arrived he was quite shy for about 30 minutes. But he warmed up, had lunch and then we went to a park. It was a really good park with lots of play equipment and a kind of water section with a small stream travelling through water features. As he was already in his wellies he had a brilliant time splashing and was really interacting with Vicky and Pete.

After we got back from the park he played with cars in their house for a while, plus some jumpy bed, before time for the normal bedtime routine. Bedtime went really well and he seemed really relaxed despite the journey and being in the north with the funny accents.

Blackwater

Sleep

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep.

Food

Elliott had fish fingers, chips and beans for lunch with some orange segments for pudding.

For tea he had toast and a yoghurt pudding.

He had a biscuit for an afternoon snacks.

Toilet

No accidents at all today - and a big shout for bottom wiping!

Naughtiness

He was really good all day, apart from one strop when he saw a green train in a shop he wanted that I wouldn't buy. I'd already bought a little aeroplane for him and I explained he couldn't have more than one toy, but he got quite upset. I also explained that he couldn't always have what he wanted and sometimes you have to wait and save up (we sometimes put moneys in a piggy bank shaped by a tardis), but he got quite inconsolable at one point. I gave him big hugs and he calmed down and we went home. But after we got home he said he didn't like the aeroplane and wanted the green train again and started being stoppy again. So I ignored him for a bit and then tried to distract him with Baby Jake and cuddles. It worked a little, but eventually he gave himself a time out (I'd started to say "come on there's no need for silliness or being grumpy, shall we have a time out to calm down"). This was quite new (self regulation) but it really seemed to do the trick and after about a minute of sitting on the step and looking grumpy he said sorry for being silly, gave me a hug and went to play with the aeroplane - and then told me he liked it!

Activities

We went swimming in the morning at Reading central pool for the first time. Very old school pool, no slides or features, just a little training pool, but we had a great time (there weren't many other people there) and he did lots of swimming from one side to the other without help (other than arm bands). There were also floats available so we messed around with those for a bit too.

After lunch we went a train ride to Blackwater. Unfortunately when we got there we discovered there wasn't much to do, but we did find a country path that we explored and saw some interesting sites. And he had lots of fun on the train ride.

When we got back we had a coffee (me) and smoothie (him) and then a look at toy shops (where the strop started) as we got back earlier than I thought due to Blackwater's dullness. I wondered if the strop might have been tiredness as swimming was pretty full on and there was quite a bit of walking in the afternoon as well. Plus he went to sleep very quickly, hardly any chatting to himself at all after I'd said good night.

Before tea we also did a bit of French (not for long though) and lots of playing with the aeroplane and cars.

Monday 4 July 2011

Marwell Zoo

Sleep

He had a short nap late afternoon today in the car on the way back from Marwell Zoo.

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep.

Food

Elliott had a ham roll for lunch with "dried fruit sweets".

For tea he had a fish fingers and toast.

He had a biscuit for an afternoon snacks.

Toilet

No accidents at all today - and more wiping after his poo again.

Naughtiness

He was really good all day, though he did have a funny 10 mintues around 2pm which we dealt with by asking him to sit down for a bit.

Activities

We went to Marwell Zoo today and met Granny there as a special day out for Granny's birthday. Elliott even sang Granny happy birthday at one point really well - though it is a bit late (first chance we've had).

We had a brilliant day. Elliott saw penguins, giraffes, lemurs, monkeys, rhinos, hippos, a cheetah, a leopard, a tiger, antelope, kangaroos, lizards, snakes, spiders, gazelles, horses, etc. He really seemed interested in lots of the animals and was doing impressions of them and at times even trying to interact with them.

As well as the animals there were some playgrounds and a soft play place so there was lots to do to break up the day.

We also took a train ride around the zoo which he really enjoyed.

By the time we got home it was already 6ish so we played with some cars and then went through the normal bed and bath time routine.

Bemerton fete

Sleep

Elliott woke at 6.30am.

He had a short nap this afternoon in the car on the way to Bemerton.

He went to bed at 7.30pm and went straight to sleep.

Food

Elliott had Weetabix for breakfast.

He had ham sandwiches for lunch.

For tea he had a fish fingers, potatoes and peas though he didn't eat many potatoes. He had a yoghurt for pudding and wouldn't eat any satsuma which was disappointing.

He had biscuits for morning and afternoon snacks.

Toilet

No accidents at all today - and even tried wiping a little after his poo.

Naughtiness

He was good for most of the day, but in the morning he went throgh half an hour where he wasn't doing what he was told on purpose I think (e.g. when asked to put on sandals just refusing) - so we had a time out on the stairs around 11am. This seemed to help and he said sorry afterwards and understood what he'd done.

Activities

In the morning we went to the New Forest with Granny where there were horses, baby horses, ducks, geese, cows, etc. He did a lot of running around and was quite brave whenever we were near any of the animals.

Then we all went to the playground at Fordingbridge on the way home and he was very adventurous with climbing, which was getting advanced. At one point he was swinging from bars saying he was a monkey. I did make sure I was right by him when he was doing the more adventurous climbing. We also played some catch with a mini football.

After lunch we went to the Bemerton Primary School fete as Granny is a governor there and Grandpa joined us. This was good fun, there was a bouncy castle, a playground and lots of stalls. We bought a few bits and pieces (jigsaw, builder's hat) and also entered some tombola's, raffles and a duck race. He was quite shy at first (it was busy), but he soon warmed up and didn't seem phased by the other children there at all (especially on his 3 turns on the bouncy castle!)
