Planes

General

Elliott was good again today.

Activities

We went to football in the morning with Granny and Grandpa. Elliott gave his award back with no problems and wasn't concerned when he didn't win it again - we'd talked about the possibility of this. He did do well again, particularly when they did an exercise kicking the ball against the side to themselves, controlling it and kicking it back against the side to themselves again. Afterwards we went to The Griffin for lunch with Granny and Grandpa where he chose pizza, beans and jacket potato. Unfortunately the pizza had chopped up bits of tomato in it (instead of tomato paste) so he ended up eating more of the shared garlic bread with the potato (mashed up) and beans.

After lunch we watched Planes at the Showcase cinema which went down very well and then we went home and played with Star Wars toys. He also did some more of his homework, after some procrastination, although once he starts he seems to want to do it all!? Anyway all that's left is sticking on the page a photo of him as a baby and topping up on which coins are which.

Disappearing magic man

General

Elliott was very good today and even though it was disappointing the magic man couldn't make it he handled it really well.

Activities

We had a lazy morning playing with toys and watching Star Wars.

After an early lunch we went to Windsor where we met up with Helen Bishop (who I lived with at University), her husband Phil and her girls Milly and Sophia - Milly is a year or so older than Elliott and Sophia a year or so younger. He was a bit shy at first but he played really nicely in the park with them and they all collected conkers (and "spiky things"). Then we headed off for the magic show down the road but unfortunately, due to a big accident on the M25, the magic man was unable to be there until a few hours later, so we got a refund and bought a Lego Chima figure with part of the money. Then we travelled home to Downton to see Granny and Grandpa and had an Old MacDonalds tea on the way. After we got to Granny and Grandpa's house we did some reading and homework (more common words and learning how to recognise different coins which he got quite good at).

Elliott was really good after school today and we went on a shopping trip again and he was really well behaved.

Activities

After getting home from shopping we had a lazy time at home playing with Lego and a Playmobile helicopter. We had a pizza tea.

First swimming lesson

General

Elliott was really good after school today, especially considering how active everything was.

Activities

Straight after school we went to Carnival Pool for his first ever swimming lesson. He had a red swimming cap to wear so the teachers knew what class he was in. There were about 6 people in his class and they spent most of the half hour lesson learning to kick with a float, and learning to do front crawl arms. He did really well considering there have been some lessons this term already and he seemed to be mainly listening to the teacher. At the end they had 5 minutes of playing on the water slide and with some toys (watering cans, etc). He said he enjoyed the lesson although he seemed a bit frustrated he was a little behind the others but I told him he'd tried really hard and just to keep trying - he definitely wanted to come back next week. He also thought he should have won a swimming award so I explained that was only for football. After swimming he also had a shower and washed his hair, etc (with some help). We had a pasta and bacon sauce tea when we got home and he had some yogurt raisins with apple and blackcurrant smoothie. Then he did his homework and did it really well and quickly - we went for apple, raisins and tomato (pasta sauce) in the diary and he also did the first part of the familiar words but there are still some boxes to fill in. He did stall on doing his homework a bit, but once he got to the table he was really good so I gave him lots of praise. We also read "Shhh!" before bed time and he did really well with that as well.

Man of the match

General

Elliott was really good all day today. However I don't know if you saw but in his book from school there is a request from Mrs Parfitt for us to have a quiet word with him and ask him to be less silly at school. I've done this and said that during class time it's not the time to be silly. I hope to catch up with her in the next week as well. She's also asked for a list of days of when Sarah picks him up and when Andy's Mum picks him up which I'll leave to you. I did notice she's referred to Andy's Mum as Granma in her note - I wonder if you could explain to her that in fact Andy's Mum is family but not his Granma as I would prefer Elliott not being confused about that kind of thing (though obviously understandable for Mrs Parfitt not to know the intricate details).

Activities

We went to football in the morning where Elliott did really well and in the game tackled hard and kept going despite taking some knocks. Because of this he got the man of the match award which he was over joyed by/ We had a chat about it being someone else's turn next week so hopefully he's prepared.

After lunch we watched some Ben 10 and then went swimming in Carnival Pool to get ready for Tuesday. He was doing really well so hopefully the lessons will come at a good time as he seems to be enjoying swimming. After swimming we had a tea of chicken, mashed potato and broccoli and he eat really well and eat some broccoli which was brilliant. So after tea we did some more homework filling in fruit and vegetables from today, including broccoli. We also then did some reading and he did really well, his reading really seems to be improving.

Lower Earley fun day

General

Elliott was really good all day today apart from one moment when we were playing football with Adam and Adam's Dad at he Lower Earley fun day when Adam didn't pass and he got upset and took quite a long time to stop sulking (he had also kicked out at Adam as well, so I talked to him about that). He also got upset when we paid to have 5 bouncy slide slides and the man controlling it told him he'd finished after he'd only had 4 - but I had also been counting and Elliott was right not the man so it was understandable. I had a word with the man involved and told him he was wrong but he refused to let Elliott have another go (seriously?) so I pointed out that he was effectively then calling me a liar as well and we left - no idea why he was so jobs worth (and wrong) considering he was working with children. Anyway afterwards Elliott calmed down but said that he thought the man was naughty and mean so it gave me a chance to talk about how sometimes in life people can be mean and the best thing to do is to move on and try not to let it bother you because actually if you remain upset it's even worse and they should be ignored. I think he got this, but he also did want the police to go and sort the man out.

Activities

We had a lazy morning playing with lego and watching television in our pyjamas.

After an early lunch of Spaghetti Bolognese we went to the Lower Earley fun day that was in the same park as the one we went to after school yesterday (and I'd heard about it from the Mums then). It was organised by the Baptist Church but there were lots of activities (bouncy castle and slide, some animals, etc). Elliott had two goes on the bouncy slide (it was the second one with the problems), he had a look at the animals (snakes, lizards, a tortoise, a rooster, a rabbit, etc) , a fire engine came that he sat in and had a look around and we played football with Adam and Adam's Dad (Adam's Mum and Freya also there along with half of Hawkedon as far as I could work out). Sarah the child minder was also there so I got a chance to meet her, she seemed very nice and I'd say your right about Elliott being a fan - top choice for what it's worth. Isaac and his Dad also came so we said hello to them and did some playing. After the fun day we went to Wokingham where we were going to go swimming in Carnival Pool to familiarise for Tuesday, but unfortunately I got my times mixed up (again) so we went to the park for a while instead (I'm going to try again tomorrow afternoon!) After we got home we did some homework as part of this week's homework is writing a diary showing the fruit and vegetables eaten every day. Fortunately there were some chopped mushrooms and onions in the Bolognese so we could write those down, as well as him having 2 bags of Strawberry Fruit Flakes - he declared that he loves mushrooms by the way, we'll see how long that lasts! Anyway we did the homework by me writing the words down in pencil and him copying over them, except he got a bit bored so I helped by guiding the pen while he held it for some letters - I have no idea if this is ok, but it's all a bit difficult when he's really not in the mood and bit worried that forcing him to do work will also make it something he hates - anyway I hoped that doing that was better than nothing and he did do half the letters himself - am trying desperately to think of ways to make homework seem fun. Bed time was also very smooth and we had a bath bomb that made the bath water blue (shaped like a robot and fizzed as it dissolved) so that was quite good fun.

Galaxy Squad

General

Elliott was really good after school today and we went on a shopping trip and he was really well behaved.

Activities

Straight after school we went to the park with Charlie, Adam and Isaac which was good fun. Then we popped into Asda to do some shopping. Then it was home for tea and we also spent his pocket money on a Lego Galaxy Squad toy which we made and played with. He went to bed really well and I let him have the iPad for bit because it's not a school night. Also he talked a lot all afternoon about Mummy's birthday and how happy he was you liked his present (a flower ring?).

Homework

General

Elliott was good after school today although I didn't get much information about how his day went - he was busy telling me about a school trip to Justin's House instead!

Activities

We did most of his homework after we got home. We did all the numbers and most of the words. He did really well with the numbers and was quite quick and motivated. We then had a break and started on the words. These were a little less smooth and he seemed quite frustrated and impatient at times. His reading of the words was absolutely brilliant. But his writing seemed a little hit and miss and he seemed quite tired, so we've left the last 4 for tomorrow night. He also seemed a bit upset at one stage that he found writing more difficult than others and that he was trying, so I told him he was doing really well and just to keep trying and that it didn't matter if other people found it easier because he'd be just as good soon. Anyway I did as much as possible to praise and encourage and it seemed to help. After homework we had pizza for tea and then did some reading after his bath which went well.

Back to school

General

Elliott was really good after school today and seemed to have had a really good first day in Year One.

Activities

We played with some Lego after school and had a pizza tea. Then after bath we did some reading - him reading one of his books which he did really well, and me reading more of his Panes book to him. I didn't let him watch the iPad after getting into bed today with me saying it was a school night and he was fine with this. I don't know if you want to do similar but if not I'm sure it will be ok to have different rules in different houses.

Aliens In The Attic

General

Elliott was really good today although we were hoping to go swimming but there were swimming lessons on in the the pool so we couldn't and he was a bit disappointed by this.

Activities

We had a lazy morning. We read some more of the Planes book and played with Lego. During lunch we watched the film "Aliens In The Attic" which was on Film Four and we both enjoyed this.

In the afternoon we went in to Wokingham and Elliott had a hair cut ready for a new school year. He was really good during this but the wait was ages (obviously a lot of people had the same idea). Then we went into town as I had some chores to do and he was very good in not demanding I bought something for him (he did ask but was much better than he can be understanding he wasn't going to get anything this time as he'd spent his pocket money already). Finally we went to the swimming pool but unfortunately it was closed to the public for swimming lessons so we went to Old MacDonalds instead for a treat last meal.

Teamwork

General

Elliott was good today although at tea time he wouldn't eat broccoli for some reason and I know he eats it when he's with you. We tried to persuade him it was very fresh but in the end gave up rather than trying to force the issue too much.

Activities

In the morning we went to football which was really good. Elliott did really well, joining in for every exercise in the session and when it got to the game he didn't get upset about passing. In fact he played really well passing to Adam and Charlie a lot and scoring a few goals. They even scored a real team goal where he tackled someone, passed it to Adam, Adam beat someone and then passed it to Charlie and then Charlie scored. We talked afterwards about how that goal was like the teamwork of The Octonauts and how teamwork is a great thing.

In the afternoon we had a lazy time and he watched the whole of Return Of The Jedi and wasn't scared by The Emperor - something he pointed out a number of times saying he was scared of him when he was 4 but now he was 5 he wasn't! We also went in to the flats garden and played lots of different made up ball games ("handball football", "goalkeeper", etc, etc). We had Roast Beef for tea and he didn't want his broccoli but did well with roast potatoes and beef.
