Theatre of Widdershins

General

Elliott was very good today and he did well listening to what he was told (mostly). There was a little bit of hyper-ness a few times but no major strops or upsets. We talked about "calming his brain" when he was being a little hyper (and he mentioned "training his brain" as well, which I said was good because he can do that himself).

Activities

After breakfast we played the Dinosaur top trumps card game again and he was beginning to get hundred and thousand concepts. Then we headed into Reading. We went to Reading Museum where they were running workshops to make Halloween decorations. This was good fun and we made a hanging bat decorated with glitter. He did almost all the work although I helped a bit with cutting out the bat template (not that you can tell which bits I cut and which bits he cut). After the activity we went for elevenses in the cafe and he coloured in a witch design which they gave him a chocolate creepy crawly for and stuck on their gallery wall. His colouring was pretty good and I think he was quite proud. Then we drove to TGI Fridays for lunch where he had chicken goujons, smiley face potatoes and beans and eat everything.

After lunch we went to South Street for the Theatre of Widdershins puppet production of 3 stories - the 3 little piggies, Goldilocks and the 3 bears and the 3 billy goats gruff (bit of a 3 theme). This was really good and was a cross between really good story telling and a puppet show. Elliott really enjoyed it and was giggling all through all the stories. He was one of the older ones there but there was lots to the show for all ages and he really concentrated well throughout the hour. After the show we went home and played with the bat decoration - now named "Freddie". We also read some more of the Star Wars phonics books and he did really well recognising quite a few words without spelling them out (we looked at the list from the summer as well) - if you can write in his school book that he read 3 Star Wars books that would be great as I forgot to pick it up. We had chicken fajitas for tea and he went to bed nicely.

Peppa Pig toys

General

Elliott was good after pick up today.

Activities

Swimming went really well again, and there were only 4 children there so he got more attention than normal. After we got home he played with some Peppa Pig toys he'd brought home with him and then eat his pasta tea really nicely. He did fall asleep after tea though and seems quite tired. He'd also clearly had a great time with Andy during the day which is brilliant and he was really pleased Andy had got his Peppa Pig toys out of the garage.

Despicable Me 2

General

Elliott was good for most of today. There was a strop after we got home in the afternoon and so he went for a rest in his room. When he emerged again he was in a much better mood and said sorry very nicely for not listening to what he was told.

Activities

He woke up quite early in new time unfortunately, though not surprisingly. We had a good morning playing Scaletrix, watching Match of the Day and Elliott designed a Christmas card for the school Christmas card offer. Then Harry Jenkins and his parents came to visit. After they arrived we had a big game of dinosaur top trumps. Then we all went to the Odeon in Bracknell for kid's club, which was Despicable Me 2, which everyone enjoyed a lot.

After the cinema we went for a buffet lunch at a curry house with everyone which went really well and Elliott had some chicken tikka, rice, naan bread and tried various other things - I found if I left things to try on the side of his place but didn't make a big deal about it he would give them a go subtly when no-one was watching. After lunch we went to Andrea's parents with everyone for a bit and this is where Elliott started being a bit silly (with Harry to be fair and they were egging each other on). After we got home and he'd had some time to himself we played with some Transformers and then did some reading with one of his school books this time. He did really well and we kept concentrating on recognising words rather than spelling them out each time. He went to bed nicely though seems quite tired.

Halloween party

General

Elliott was very good today and we worked hard on listening to instructions.

Activities

After breakfast we played an Early Learning top trumps game with Dinosaur cards and Elliott did really well with numbers and which were the biggest (i.e. winning numbers). We also did some reading with some new Star Wars phonics books I ordered after parent's evening which are same kind of standard as his current school books. As soon as he saw the books were Star Wars he read two of them and did very well with reading, really beginning to recognise certain words without having to spell them out. After that we played Twister before playing the Dinosaur top trumps again with Andrea. Then we all headed out to Carnival Pool for swimming - Elliott swimming with no arm bands and practicing things he's learning at lessons (jumping in, swimming on his back, breast stroke arms, putting his head underwater, a kind of front crawl, etc). He had a shower after swimming and washed his hair, though not quite as much on his own as I was hoping.

After swimming we had lunch in The Gig House in Wokingham and Elliott had a hot dog and chips with apple juice. Then it was off the  Shinfield for an Halloween party with some of Andrea's friends. There were lots of children there including Joshua who is Elliott's age and they both got on really well. There were games (pass the bucket, pin the tail on the witch) and lots of playing and he was really well behaved. He also had a fish finger, chips and beans tea there with homemade Halloween fairy cake for pudding. Finally it was back home for some iPad, me reading Planes to him and bedtime at 8pm to bridge the gap with the clocks changing.

Coastguard Lego

General

Elliott was good after school today. When I first picked him up we talked about him trying really hard to listen and not interrupt when I read him his story before bed and he remembered the instruction when I asked if he had a few times as the evening progressed (and then also did listen without interrupting). He did have a moment before bath time because he hadn't finished with his Lego building, but after calming down in his room he did a really good apology and explained very well what the silly behaviour had been.

Activities

We went shopping straight after school and he was good so we used his pocket money to buy a new Lego set (coastguard). When we got home I challenged him to make the set on his own and he did really well. He did get upset that he had to stop to have his bath but he followed the instructions really well. And then when I read his Planes book to him he listened and didn't interrupt and after I finished we talked about what had happened in the part I read and he had taken most of it in - though he did say "my brain finds it difficult to remember" about the one part he didn't retain.

Dinosaur biscuits

General

Elliott was good after school today.

Activities

When he came out of school he had a baking bag with 2 dinosaur biscuits in it that he'd made. We eat these "for energy" before swimming. Swimming went well (apart from breaking his goggles) and we had a new teacher this week. Then we went home for some cheese on toast for tea (he said he had sausages for lunch and declared he loves sausages when they're in gravy). We read before bed and he went to bed very nicely.

Apple Day

General

Elliott was good for the whole of today apart from an incident just before football when he got upset about not being able to take his Lego toys with him. He eventually calmed down but it took a while and at one point I thought we might miss football.

Activities

Football was really good, although he wasn't always as engaged and paying as much attention as sometimes. He did well though and enjoyed himself. During the actual match Fabio kept stopping them and telling them about "taking easy options" and "giving options" - I think he might have lost quite a few of them during this as sometimes the advice lasted for quite a while. Elliott listened mostly but I think shorter advice might have been better for them at their stage. Obviously the boys do a great job overall though and the session was still very enjoyable for all of them.

After a quick lunch of honey rolls and fruit bits we headed off to Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre for Apple Day. We met up with Dave, Jo, Alice and Fi and had a great time despite some heavy rain. We started with some pond dipping where we found loads more creatures than last time at Dinton Pastures. Then we went around the stalls where there were some craft style shops (we bought a wooden dice), some Morris Dancers, some animals (birds of prey, Shetland pony, goats, sheep, calf, rabbits and ducks) and some circus skills equipment to play on. I think we all enjoyed the circus skills equipment best. We also had a quick look at the big apple stall. Then we stopped off at the Read's house on the way home and played with some Lego and had a look at Alice's new violin. Finally we had chicken and baked potato for tea before he did his homework really well - normal word practice but also we wrote some sentances about his trip to the Church and he was very independent, writing most of the second sentence all by himself.

The Look Out

General

Elliott said he felt much better this morning and seemed more himself again. He did lie in until 8am so hopefully has caught up on some sleep. He was good for the whole day apart from not wanting to leave The Look Out when there was some silliness, but we had a chat and he apologised.

Activities

In the morning Elliott went to visit Harry and Jack Higgins at Andrea's parents house with Andrea while I did some chores to get ready for Granny visiting later. Then I went over to meet up with them and we spent some time playing there.

After Granny arrived we had a spaghetti bolognese lunch that Elliott eat very well - even talking about how much he now liked the red bits. After lunch we all went to The Look Out where we went for a walk before playing in the outside playgrounds. We also built some shelters in the woods behind the playgrounds where trimmed branches are left out and people use them to build dens. We bumped into Samuel Bailey while we built our den. After Granny left tea and bedtime was very smooth and we read Dad's Birthday before bed.

Crawley's Claw Ripper

General

Elliott was really good after school today. However he also seemed a bit under the weather and said he felt a bit sick. He also went to sleep after we got home before bedtime.

Activities

We went shopping on the way home from school and Elliott bought some Lego Chima with his pocket money - Crawley's Claw Ripper. Before he had his rest he started making this and was following the instructions really well.

Tuesday 15 October 2013

Chicken nuggets in wraps

General

Elliott was really good after school today. He did touch a hot plate and was upset but was fine after running under a cold tap and there is no mark. We talked about the importance of listening when people say "don't touch something" and how there are reasons grown ups ask him not to do things.

Activities

Swimming went really well again and he had a shower this week afterwards and washed himself and his hair (with some help). We did a bit of reading when we got home and had some chicken nuggets in wraps for tea. He also seemed quite excited about the idea of hot dinners again tomorrow and went to bed really well.

Tuesday 8 October 2013

Jenga

General

Elliott was really good after school today.

Activities

We went straight to swimming where it was more teaching swimming on his back. Also his teacher Kate got him to dip his head under the water a few times which was great. Then we went home for a chicken dipper supper followed by some reading and a game or 3 of Jenga.

Monday 7 October 2013

Tattoos

General

Elliott was really good after school today.

Activities

We went food shopping on the way home from school and Elliott was very good. After we got home we played on the iPad, had a pasta tea that he ate really well and then he read very well before bed before we put on some temporary tattoos.

Wednesday 2 October 2013

Star Wars

General

Elliott was good after school today although he did refuse to eat any broccoli with his tea unfortunately. He does also have a bruise by his eye which he got from another boy (Cameron?). It sounds like it was an accident and part of playing, but it also sounds as though Cameron was told off.

Activities

We had a quiet time after school playing and watching Star Wars. We did some reading as well. Tea was chicken, mashed potato and not quite broccoli.

Tuesday 1 October 2013

Back stroke

General

Elliott was good after school today apart from procrastinating over tea a little bit, but he eventually got on with it.

Activities

We went to his second swimming lesson after school today and he seemed to enjoy it again. They focused on swimming on their backs today and so he lent back on a float and did a lot of kicking. We had a spaghetti tea when we got home and did a little bit of reading but he was really tired after his swimming so we didn't do as much as normal.
