Harry Higgins in Durrington

General

Elliott was good for most of today. However there were some moments while we were with Harry and he had a time out at the Higgins house as he was using silly behaviour to get his own way again. I did get him to admit again when he apologised that silly behaviour didn't get him what he wanted.

Activities

In the morning we played at Granny's house and went for some elevenses at Waitrose on the way to visit Harry Higgins in his new house in Durrington. We got to the Higgins house around 11am and played there with Harry and Albert inside and outside for a while. Then Lara left to see her Dad and we all had a nice lunch.

After lunch we scootered to the playground in Durrington where Elliott, Harry and Albert all played together. After quite a long time playing we also visited the skate ramps in the park on scooters for some supervised fun which both Elliott and Harry seemed to really enjoy. After we got back from the park we watched some Tom and Jerry before heading back to Reading for tea, bath and bed time.

The Science Museum

General

Elliott was good for most of today. However we went shopping quickly to Asda in the morning to buy rolls for lunch and he got very upset that we didn't "borrow a toy", even though I told him we'd be borrowing one later when we went to the Science Museum. In the end I had to leave Andrea to buy the shopping and take him out for a time out on a bench in the mall outside Asda. It took him about 5 minutes to sit down properly for the time out, but after he did he said sorry for being silly and admitted that silly behaviour didn't get him what he wanted.

Activities

In the morning we played at Andrea's flat, watched some Sonic, did some drawing and went to Asda for elevenses and to get some rolls for a packed lunch on our way to London.

In the afternoon we went with Andrea to London to meet with Hilary Weale, my Godmother's daughter, and we all went to The Science Museum. This was a really good afternoon. There was lots to see and do and lots of button's to press. He especially enjoyed the space section, a section with some trains, cars and aeroplanes and the interactive basement that is like a swisher version of The Look Out. We also had some tea there and borrowed some a bag of space toys - figures and little rockets - as he seemed very inspired by space exploration. After our visit Elliott and I drove down to Downton to see Granny again and stay over for the evening.

Name card

General

Elliott was good after school today and also got a tick on his name card at school for sitting nicely on the carpet. I think if he gets 4 ticks he gets a house point.

Activities

We went to shopping and to Andrea's house after school. He was really good and enjoyed himself.

Ch

General

Elliott was really good after school today apart from refusing to eat his pasta.

Activities

We did some watching television, some playing and before bed we read the books he'd bought back from school and did some more "ch"ing. For tea we had rolls as pasta was the only hot option before payday and he was refusing it - in the end I thought it was better for him to eat something than nothing!

Ultimate Spider Monkey

General

Elliott was good for most of the day, although as it was raining all day he was a bit restless just after lunch as we didn't get a chance to get outside. Nothing too bad though. He also has been using his Lypsyl quite a bit so hopefully this will help his lips at school.

Activities

In the morning we spent lots of time playing with Granny and were doing some role play pretending to pay for items in shops, etc, and some puzzles. Lots of cars as well though. We also went back to Tescos and Granny wasn't feeling very well and I got him another little Ben 10 figure ("Ultimate Spider Monkey").

After lunch we watched a mixture of football (Liverpool verses Manchester United) and Shaun The Sheep, whilst playing on the iPad before heading back to Reading for some playtime and then bath and bed.

Lypsyl

General

Elliott was good for all of today and was very energetic for the whole day. I also bought some lypsyl with him that we chose together and he is now learning how to apply himself. I'll put this in his book bag and write in his exercise book that he has lypsyl he can now apply himself. I also noticed some eye rubbing today, but only towards the end of the day as he was getting tired.

Activities

We were meant to be seeing Harry Higgins this morning but due to sleep deprivation this was cancelled. So instead we had a lazy morning playing and watching Shaun the Sheep and a trip to Tesco to buy lypsyl and a few others bits and pieces.

In the afternoon Charlie and Pete Sladen came over to visit - Granny is away until this evening. Both boys had a great time playing together and we went to the park as well where they were both very active and energetic.

Hot Wheels

General

Elliott had a good day at school today and was really good after school too. Miss Biscoe spoke to me as she has noticed a habit Elliott has of pulling his eye lids and rubbing his eyes. She asked me if I'd noticed it before and I said a bit but not much and she asked if he'd seen anyone about it and I said I thought he'd seen a Doctor but I could be wrong and that I'd pass on. Now she's mentioned it I've noticed him do it a little, though I think it might be when he's anxious or nervous? We also talked about his lips and vaseline and she said she can't apply vaseline herself but he could, so am going to try to teach him to put it on himself this weekend! She said if I put some in his school bag and wrote in exercise book to remind her she'd try and encourage him to put it on too. Exercise book wasn't in his book bag as he'd forgotten to put it in, so she went and got it and encouraged him to remember to put it in bag in future..

Activities

After school we travelled down to Granny and Grandpa's house which was quick due to leaving time being good for traffic. In the car he was reading one of his school books - "Dad's Birthday" and it had a CD so we put that on! We played with some Hot Wheels toys before tea, bed and bath.

Curriculum meeting

General

Elliott was really good after school today and even let me put vaseline on his lips as long as I put some on mine. His lips were quite sore today though, but he didn't seem affected.

Activities

Before I picked him up from School I went to the meeting about curriculum. This was quite interesting. They started by explaining the aims of the F2 year (and F1 because there were F1 parents there as well). This is all very similar to Monkey Puzzle, but hopefully they'll put the slides up on the website - http://www.school-portal.co.uk/GroupHomepage.asp?GroupID=245849. Then they gave a few tips and also talked about the website above, which they don't like using much but does have some information on there so worth looking at. They are going to let us know a login for the extra information available so if you get those details be good to know it. The most interesting tips and information from the session I thought were:
  • When actions are being used and especially bad actions to communicate (hitting, etc) the teachers use the phrase "use your words" to encourage verbal communication
  • Encouraging clearing up is good even if they don't complete the task (think you already do this, I try!)
  • When reading pictures are more important than words so they can link visual recognition of words to pictures - encouraging him to tell the story from the pictures and then reading the words helps put words into context
  • Encouraging independence in all activities is good (again think you already do this, I try!)
  • The squiggly hand writing templates are called "cursive" handwriting and make it easier for them to learn how to do joined up writing quicker apparently
  • There's a whole new way of saying letters (see video on website)
  • They'll be releasing a time-table of what goes on during school day soon, and a calendar of the topics they're focusing on - if you get hold of this I'd be very grateful if I can get a copy
  • There will be parents evenings in October - but you can talk to teachers, though end of day is better time to approach them
  • The website is good to look at though hard for them to use
Anyway it was good to go to and I hope they get the slides for actual curriculum detail up on the website. After the session we went to Asda to shop for a birthday present and card for you which was funny as he was convinced you'd want either toys he liked (Octonauts, etc) or girl toys (Barbie, etc). Then we got home and he changed out of school clothes really well. Then we basically just played with the "laptops" and some cars, had tea, bath and bedtime.

The letter s

General

Elliott was really good after school today, changed out of his uniform well and went to bed nicely.

Activities

We did some watching television, but also he did some writing practice with the letter s (I think) that he'd brought home from school. He also got me to write some s's and either ticked or crossed them, which I assume happens to him when he does them at school.

The letter e

General

Elliott was good for most of today. However when we were shopping in Tescos I wouldn't "borrow" him a toy and he had a really big tantrum. I put down the shopping and took him out of the supermarket and back home for a time out. This tantrum lasted, on and off, for quite a while. However eventually he calmed down and then we had a really constructive chat about how shouting was bad behaviour and didn't get him what he wanted anyway.

Activities

We had lazy morning playing and watching television before popping in to Tescos to buy packed lunch for tomorrow.

In the afternoon after his time out and lunch we went back to Morrisons to do the shopping and he was really well behaved. We also had a really long bath and did some reading before story time as well as story time, though he only seems to recognise e still - but I tried to introduce lots of other letters.

Hawkedon day two

General

Elliott was good for all of this afternoon though a little tired after school I think.

Activities

We got home and got changed before going to Tescos to buy packed lunch for tomorrow.

After we got home we had a lazy time playing and watching television.

Scootering in park

General

Elliott was good for most of today although at lunch he took a while to sit down and then only ate a little of his sausage and potato before deciding instead to have some shreddies. At one point getting him to the table turned into a bit of stand off, but I ended up ignoring him and he slowly crept to the table.

Activities

We had lazy morning playing and watching television, though we did go out for a little bit to Tescos and for a bit of a run around.

In the afternoon we went to Victoria Park in Salisbury with Granny and did some scootering, before driving back.

Visiting Charlie

General

Elliott was good for all of today.

Activities

In the morning we went back to Granny and Grandpa's house and then went out for lunch with Granny in a pub.

After lunch we went to visit the Sladens. Elliott had a lot of fun playing with Charlie Sladen and they played a lot with cars and outside with Octonauts toys. They also did lots of running around and played games like hide and seek. He was also really good with Alice who is now about 16 months old. However Poppy wasn't there as she was at a friend's house.

Crocodile

General

Elliott was good for most of today. However he did have quite a bad tantrum about packing an extra toy before we left for Andrea's flat which lasted for quite a while. He had a time out and eventually calmed down.

Activities

In the morning we had a lazy time and played and watched some television. .

After lunch we went to the Living Rain Forest with Andrea. This was really good and he was really engaged by the birds, fish, spider, monkeys, lizards and turtles there. The crocodile even moved, which is the first time we've ever seen the crocodile move. We also had some tea there and played outside on the play equipment there as it was dry and sunny for the first time ever when we've visited. After the Living Rain Forest we went back to Andrea's flat to stay over via Daddy and Elliott's house which is when he had his tantrum about what toys were packed.
